A graduated naturopathic framework for considering the purpose, intensity and safety of care. It is responsive guidance—not a compulsory ladder and never a reason to delay indicated treatment.

  1. Establish the foundations for healthExplore nourishment, rest, movement, relationships and living conditions.
  2. Support self-regulating processesConsider appropriate practices that support recovery and regulation.
  3. Support weakened or affected systemsUse individual assessment to identify where targeted support is needed.
  4. Address structural integrityConsider appropriate physical assessment and care for function and movement.
  5. Use targeted natural substances when appropriateAssess evidence, quality, contraindications and medicine interactions.
  6. Use pharmaceutical care when indicatedWork with the appropriate prescribing clinician.
  7. Use higher-force interventions when necessarySpecialist, surgical or urgent care may be the appropriate first response.

Safety comes firstUrgent or serious conditions may require immediate medical treatment at any point. Foundations and clinical treatment can work together. Do not stop prescribed medicines without consulting the relevant clinician.
